One for the oppai fans this one. It strongly resembles a cross between “Ganbare, Douki-chan” (AtelierPontdarc 2021) and “Higehiro” (Project No.9 2021). The five-minute episodes are based upon the drawings of Kiseki Himura that had been originally posted only on Twitter. The key concept is built around the regular Monday meeting between a young office worker and a high school girl (Ai) on their commutes to work & school. Season one covers the deepening of their friendship after their initial chance encounter. Their relationship is platonic but her beauty and charm makes him wish that he had had a girlfriend like that when he was her age. She cares for him and flirts a little to raise a smile to cheer up his Monday mornings. In return he chaperones her on her journey. That is the core of this gentle tale however the audience soon learns that every woman this chap meets has enormous breasts. One such girl is his close office colleague who is seeking to get closer to the him. In typical anime-fashion our hero keeps her at arm’s length and doesn’t seem to get the message.

The whole affair is charming if a little silly. The story is dominated by women’s breasts. The tokens of Ai’s affections for our office worker are the buttons from the shirts that keep popping off due to the expansion of her “cushioning” as she calls it. This may well be the point but in some ways it trivialises what could be a more interesting study. This is a unique Japanese cultural phenomenon. The combination of enormous-boob jokes, teenage under-age girls and their inappropriate relationships with older men, are not something that would be accepted on western shores. Titillation outside of Japan was always tinged with a sense of Catholic-guilt. You can joke about boobs to your hearts content but not teenage girls. The nearest equivalent maybe the St Trinians school girl tradition but this would be deemed too politically incorrect if not done without suitable irony and loads of girl-power. Right-on. It remains unclear if “Tawawa on Monday” is intended to be ironic or some kind of pervy soft porn. Kiseki Himura’s intention was to provide a pick-me-up for people on their Monday morning commute to work. As such it has all the depth of a pancake. It is really cheeky, unsuitable for family viewing and enjoys highly questionable content. Yet there is nothing displeasing about Season One. Morality aside “Tawawa on Monday” is a lot of fun to watch. If you like pretty teenage girls with ample curviness then this is for you. Mostly harmless.
